as long as I can remember

as long as I can remember
I thought something was very wrong
with the world we live in
as a child in first grade
my teacher told the class how God made us
I never forgot that, something was very wrong

as a teenager I just could not listen to the teachers
everything felt wrong to me, I did not feel like
I was being taught how to think, but what to think
just a bad feeling about where society is headed
so I got caught up in the psychedelic wave
thinking I was learning something from this
LSD that was suddenly appearing on the scene

the truth is, is that I had no way to know what was
really going on, so I was washed down stream
I felt that my life was going to be taken over
by what I felt was wrong, I did not know
why it was, or how it was, but I felt it
so the psychedelic thing came along
and it seemed like a way to escape
my bad feeling of wrongness

it took me along with it and I listened
to the music and the words of the songs
some of those words seemed to share my feeling
about the sick society we live in, I took psychoactive
drugs, but I did it because it allowed me to see things
because I thought that is what a real education
would be like, that we would learn how to think
I now think that is what poetry is, it shows you
a way to learn how to think, so you can think
because you want to be able to know
why things are so messed up

the reality of this world, is that the few people
that run this planet, don't care about the rest of us
poetry alone will not change this fact, but it can
keep the word alive, if you don't see how messed up
things are, then you are not really listening to
the poetry of the world, because the words
are trying to tell us through the art

everything we are told, here it is, is really wrong
and there are reasons for this, people write about
these things in books, but you have to read a lot
of books, so i read a lot of books when I
first was becoming a poet, and poetry is about
books, you put poems in books

but when the internet came along
it changed the face of poetry, it allowed anyone
to write their poetry online, so more people could
share their words, but it also kinda diluted the
poetic sense in some ways, because before you
really had to want to do it

the few messed up monsters running this planet
are destroying it, because they cannot get around
their insanity, so they put their insanity into
a religion, and put that off on the rest of us
and they had their own religion, based on
absolute selfishness, which is insane
because it destroys the planet

poetry can be entertaining, but it is really education
I would rather write about the rain of umbrellas
and the stone of clouds, but we need to get rid
of presidents, we need a conclave of enlightened
leaders, that is always recycling so the way
we run the world is that everybody matters

no more bankers, no more war mongers
no more bought off scientists that tell lies
no more popes that live in luxury
while millions go hungry every day
no more evil corporations that pollute
the planet we live on, the air, food, water

I could go on like this, and after awhile
I might just write about the rain of umbrellas
or maybe tell a story about the elephant's memory
I know the look in an elephants eye
but meanwhile the whales are dying
and are laying all over the beaches

where are the advanced technologies of the aliens
when you need them, oh my poets we are like the
elephants
