First Light

First light, the gray light,
Light that makes no shadows
Nor relieves the darkness,
Not the light of the new day
But ashes of light from the old.
Gray light is a memory
Of a time when things were done
In a distant land, Things best done
In gray light, things that shun
The true light of day, things done by
The ghost of him who I once was,
Who lived ever after with the taste of ashes
That comes with first light, the gray light

There's something beyond night and day in that dim light of a shade that can't be named (though you put a name to it). Something going way back.
