inspiration # 39

[saw]

a man sits at his desk
hoping to tap the keg
of inspiration and hold
his tongue below the spigot of a new big bang

lap up enough poetic intoxicant
to prevent him from walking a straight line
'cause anyone can do that.....
there's virtuosity in the zigs

genius in the zags, new looks
through bloodshot eyes, so he waits
for the delivery, that familiar sound
the cosmic truck tires

on cerebral cobblestones, the bumps
and grinds of bad breaks, metal on mettle
the hint of friction, the rough mesh
of gears downshifting to slow the roll

enough for a poet
to flag him into the right driveway

so roll out the barrel
I can sleep tomorrow
let the Andrews Sisters be my guide
there's poetry and three part harmony on tap

this isn't insomnia, the vehicle has arrived.....
and I'm drunk on the collective consciousness
so put away your axe, there's no prohibition here,
only a thirsty old poet
