what a student needs most from a teacher

Post by Whitebird Sings » May 6th, 2005, 8:23 am

somewhere i read

that what a student
needs most
from a teacher
is to be convinced
of the power hidden
in the student's being
and that they can
reach it

seems right

what a student needs most
from a teacher
is to get the false impression
that they can do anything
if they set their mind at work

What a student can best make use of from a teacher is a genuine apprenticeship.

This is why the wealthy, who have the greatest number of choices in educational modality ( as in everything else) choose to learn from personal tutors. The "home schooling" movement among the unwealthy is another version of the private tutorial . . .

Unfortunately, in public ( and many private) educational institutions, many rules, protocols and measurements stand between the student and the teacher in this regard. The formation of a genuine, disciplined apprenticeship becomes nearly impossible under these conditions.

The best writing about education, and the best "systems"
( fortunately, they aren't systems) advocated in them I have seen are Newman's "The Idea of a University" and "My Music, My Life" by Ravi Shankar:

( the best chapter in Newman's book is "Knowledge Its Own End")
