Gamble

Post by Doreen Peri » May 5th, 2026, 1:35 am

The quality of a moment
is measured by ideal inches,
minute hands second to second
ticks of fate and if you wait
too long for miracles,
you will create a flight
of precious time, the night,
your only companion,
the dark, your friend,
and in the end
there will not be questions
of why but interjections
of perhaps.

Love is a Saturday night Reno gamble.
Sometimes its a sweet suite,
other times it's craps.

yes there is risk involved with initiating connection
i have many thoughts of what if......
wondering why I didn't pursue a strong possibilty
take a chance
the death of empathy is the birth of barbarism

afraid of a misstep
sure I was misreading signals
assuming the worst
I stayed safe in my burrow -
wondering now...
what if I hadn't?

I guess
the whole thing,
life itself, is a gamble.

Thanks for reading Steve, Roy, and Mark. You’re all exactly right.
————————-

(I wrote this one below on the same topic in 2004 on the litkicks site)

you could go to school and hate your class,
the professor could turn out to be an ass,
you could run to the girl you've always dreamed of,
find out she's got a vast vacant space between her ears,
has no class and spits in her beer
and love could disappear right out the door.
but what are you going to do? be afraid
of every step you never made? what for?

nobody goes anywhere standing still.
should you follow your heart? or follow your will?
what if it turns out the girl is a doll
and you're her prince charming after all?
what if the courses in creative writing
better your talents and make you more
exciting and charming? whatever's
in store is always alarming.
unless, of course, you don't do a thing.
then, nothing will be happening

if you try to qualify the vast unknown,
you might as well stay home

both poems are thought provoking
what is life but a gamble
I like to stay in safety
afraid of all the craps
I'd rather learn from one bird how to sing than teach 10,000 stars how not to dance.
