G. B. Shaw and Me

Post by joel » September 28th, 2005, 12:27 am

Pity boy: poor and boorish and rude!
For his heart-and-mind strength, he was crude—
twofold hunger implored
him: the mind he adored
begged for thought as his heart ached its food.

How esteemed is your Lonely reveals
what you are: for both lonely appeals
to mind’s self-fascination
as to fatal temptation
to despise it for how alone feels.

Lovely listlessness—summed in a thought
apathetic—confused my mind’s ‘ought’
with synthetic romance
in a heartbeat-up trance:
such expanse cheap emotion had bought.

What’s the universe worth, if not nil?
Conversation debates in jest till
what is traded for love
is the room just to hover
above and reflect and be still.

Pity boy: undistinguished, askew.
Given life, he but teetered it through.
Every compliment paled him,
every complement failed him—
love and reason are always in lieu.
"Every genuinely religious person is a heretic, and therefore a revolutionary" -- GBShaw

This reminds me of myself growing up in the rual south and the likes of Heinlein, Zalasky, Herbert, kept me company. Such a quality to the style of this poem, almost soothing to read in a melancholy reminisent way. iblieve
