When my baby was three, I saw her
after fifteen years. He was still alive then,
the thrive of a concert pianist, consultant, military
heartsong from a regimented dream and they danced
and now that he's gone, my baby twenty years more,
she, with her spirit laughed out from a smile wider
than the diameter of the universe, someone else
loves her now and he is hardy, strong, vivid,
dynamic, all there, all here; Love shined in her
eyes like when she first gave birth to each
of her five! Short minor moments long will exist
and do! "She looks more like you than you,"
she said, laughing so pure like a harp and I asked
what she meant and said I understood even though
I didn't know and she answered, "I remember you
this age, not that." And I replied from my eyes not
my mouth, "I remember your spirit. It is embraced
in my blood" and I asked if she recalled the time
I ran away from home and lived with her as my
mother and she shook her head no but welcomed
me to sing a cappella again at the
dinner table.
