One of the qualities of love is honesty.
and honesty, like love, has its risks and consequences
Love has many qualities--compassion, giving, affection, understanding, respect, indulgence, acceptance
all these rest on honesty
they rest on truth telling, which is risky business
if I told you that your fly was down, would you hate me?
if I mentioned that your breath was stale, would I have to hail a cab?
if I pointed out that your G string was out of tune
or that you were drunk and howling at the moon
would you banish me from your kingdom?
the truth has its downside
honesty is the fondest fault

You tell me love has many qualities:
compassion, giving, understanding and
respect, indulgence, and affection and
acceptance—love is risky honesties,
you say. And I say love is more than these
and less than this—a simple being, grand
and indivisible, where ampersand
links attributes and not identities—
Love is (and not possesses) honesty.
And honesty’s the fondest fault you claim
(a risky business, I agree with you)—
a love-is-truth-is-fault equality,
a tested faith that love would rather name
divine, an anxious hope that love is true.
