Those feeling games

Post by hester_prynne » June 8th, 2008, 4:25 pm

Last night,
I spoke with
the pit in my gut.
It's difficult
to converse with her,
as she is me,
and plays
those feeling games.
Her expressions
are never misleading
about the pain,
however,
where it comes from
eludes us both.
We only know,
that it is loud,
forboding,
and fierce.
We only know,
that it is frightening,
as if the very eyes
of death,
are in the room,
and indeed,
we stare it down,
but not without
trembling,
not without missing
the comfort of
loving arms,
not without
helplessness,
who remains
our biggest foe
ever.

"not without helplessness"

i'm being trashed by a fast moving virus and "cold medicine" just rusts me to the pier but this line got really coherent on me as i was reading your piece and i wanted to say something as clear back but as you can see it is beyond me at the moment...it was a hammer to me this line was & the rest of your piece swirled around it hurricane style...anyways...i gotta go, my face is falling off...my lungs are cement blocks...my brain is sawdust jello...and thx for writing this...
Doll, you may have found a place of rest but I'm still on the trail.

hey, i can talk - my face hasn't left me yet
though after viewing it in the mirror, i fear it's still halfway in that weird dream of museum antiquities.

but to the poem and the stomach pit of fear
brilliant - that's how it is alright
universal gut talk, true as the terror that confronts me in moments from time to time
speaking to fear is the only way to appreciate it
fear knows the score
knows the worst case scenario better than anyone else
fear's got all the escape routes covered and knows there is never escape
it grows and expands and would conquer me
if i feared not to face it
but i talk to fear
like you do in this poem, hester,
and talk takes everything back to possible.
(and who can fear the possible?)

thanks for putting down fear so honestly

Hester I know the pit of fear well. You describe it so excellently here. The Bene Gesserit of the Dune books say,"Fear is the little death." The rest of the saying which I forget says allow fear to flow through you and dissipate or something like that. Well done my friend.

Thanks to you folks for responding.
It's an honor
as well as a pair of comforting arms,
to be read.
Indeed, the possibilities are as unwavering
as the fear....

a beautifully intense description of fear's influence in a life, the conversation we continually have with ourself ....the back and forth...
our struggle to stay on top of unraveling.....the thing that has helped me the most is humor, and the understanding that this too shall pass..
nice work, hester.........

i like the honest directness of your poem. we have to deal with fear - usually without a clear bead on its origin. yeah, we know it's familial, but knowing and overcoming it are two distinct entities. add to this the fears that lurk on the horizon - thoroughly legitimate - and it can be trying. all i can say is that we are all friends here and it helps to vocalize these feelings, if only to realize that you've company in this fierce world. more power to theda!!
