after B.F. Skinner

Post by e_dog » January 10th, 2005, 4:07 am

You,
typing at the computer,
staring at the bright light
are a rat
pressing a lever,
a chicken
pecking at a button,
waiting,
hoping
for your food pellets
to arrive
through the door
on the end
of the shoot.

shoot is spelled chute in this case.

i was reading earlier that rats can tell the difference between dutch and japanese.

i wish manipulating my lever had more tangible results.

good poem as sentence.

or sentence as poem?

dog

I went to North Texas State (as it was called at that time, now it's University of North Texas)
One of my various majors was psychology. NT was a hotbed of behaviorists. Skinner was
a minor god there. Can we learn how to act from pigeons? Or do we need LSD?

WOW. Lightning Rot got a hair cut?

IM at least 35 years younger and lots more hair than dat, Mam..
but if ya tried real hard, you might be able to write a Rickles joke someday.

And anytime you want to compare notes on say Skinner, Watson , Pavlov ,etc--or say the Pointsman, the behaviorist in Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow-- have at it.

O shut up, you prattling moron.
That wasn't a Rickles joke? LOL!!!! But it made me laugh so hard just like I laughed at Rickles jokes.

Hey, peresozo, who's Skinner? and Watson? I know nothing about them.

oh wait... Skinner... Wasn't he a basketball player for the one of the major NBA teams.... i'll go look him up on http://www.nba.com/

and Watson... he was in the Hounds of the Baskervilles, right? Umm... lemme see... oh yeah... "Elementary, my dear Watson!" lol... yeah... I know who he was. I heard that was a cool book but I never read it.

Pavlov? He had a dog and made the dog salivate using bells. That's my full extent of knowledge regarding the man.

Pointsman? lemme think... oh yeah... wasn't he the guy who had a singing group called the Poinstman Brothers? No wait! That was the Pointsman SISTERS. No... geesh... dammit... that was the PoinTER Sisters. :D

I'm not doing very well at this, am I? Pooh!

Ok, lemme try Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow... I wrote a poem by that title once because on this other board where someone was trying to flaunt her pseudointellectualism, it was pissing me off, so I did a google search and gotta buncha words from a book review and chopped 'em up into a lines and called it a poem and posted it to the thread. It was a Don Rickles type joke. She didn't get it. But I did. I laughed for a while about it. I never read the book. I think it would probably bore me to tears. 8)

And that's all I know!

I enjoy comedy, though. For Christmas, I bought myself the new George Carlin book called, "When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops?" I'm keeping it on the back of the john and pick it up to read it every now and then when I'm in one of those shitty pensive moods. Makes the experience more bearable.

I donno, I never was much of a Don Rickles fan, but you do that type of slam humor so much better than he did. You sure you didn't take his Mail-in Comedy Course? Betchya did! *wink*
