But then, maybe they were trying to drum up business.

It's difficult for most humans to accept that what appears to be "freedom" was determined (genetically, biologically, economically, etc) but that's what the facts suggest, apart from perhaps negligible subatomic glitches ala QM. We are more like CPUs than like ghosts, as is nature itself. Entropy also an issue that many intoxicated with QM overlook: energy will dissipate. Things fall apart.

There's a political issue with the colliders as well: should govt. devote millions to these high-powered particle physics experiments (many of which don't really produce anything tangible)? Probably more prudent to sink the money into say energy and bio-fuel research, or ethanol plants for that matter. Or perhaps kinder gentler gulags ....
