Cold Shock River

stepping into the river, a reminder
of mountain snows far above
the cold shock rises from my ankles
until goose bumps rise on my arms
the stones like a cobblestone road
worn smooth by the rush of water
and above the trees rain leaves
that bobble like tiny sail boats around me
i remember how it used to be before
before the backhoes and graters
and the condominiums intruded
when the trout rose to catch a blackfly
the trout are long gone, the water
empty of life, just rubble along the bank
muddy waters, tree stumps and debris
where a favorite memory flows
of mountain snows far above
the cold shock rises from my ankles
until goose bumps rise on my arms
the stones like a cobblestone road
worn smooth by the rush of water
and above the trees rain leaves
that bobble like tiny sail boats around me
i remember how it used to be before
before the backhoes and graters
and the condominiums intruded
when the trout rose to catch a blackfly
the trout are long gone, the water
empty of life, just rubble along the bank
muddy waters, tree stumps and debris
where a favorite memory flows
