Better than gold

Standing,
each evening,
on deck
of my youth.
My head,
lighter of
angst,
comf ter blee older now.
Enough to cherish,
what I never knew
I missed.
Evergreen branches,
next to the old porch,
creak in the wind.
I heard them for
the first time this time.
Apologized for not
hearing them wail
years ago,
over my own,
silent, teenaged
screams.
Nightmares I left here
stayed on.
No longer to haunt me.
I hold them gently
in my open
cupped hands now.
Coo them,
count them,
like blessings,
tenfold times,
better than gold.
each evening,
on deck
of my youth.
My head,
lighter of
angst,
comf ter blee older now.
Enough to cherish,
what I never knew
I missed.
Evergreen branches,
next to the old porch,
creak in the wind.
I heard them for
the first time this time.
Apologized for not
