I’ve only asked

I’ve only asked for you to fill the lapse
within my knowledge of our history—
the gap between you loved me and you lied.
If you espouse a friendship still between
us after you divorced our honesty,
bestow on me the mystery I’ve, please—
repeatedly I’ve asked, I’ve begged— please end
my ignorance, please be to me a friend
of word and not in word alone. Our frieze
seems shallow carved, its surface majesty
seems easily eroded. I don’t mean
to trouble you—you’re surely justified
to secrets. Maybe though, consider me
a former lover, not a friend perhaps.
