And where will be the prophecy today
and how will it appear?
Exaggerated
dogwood leaves, despondent in the west-
fall shade and equal shades of ruddy age:
O. virginianus, casual
and lazy in your graceful hungers, come
and prophesy by metaphor of still,
of watchful confidence, of instinct will
to wander, wait and live. It sounded dumb
(in silence, not slow-wittedness), the full
accomplishment of mystic words that raged
to watch the white-tailed deer at pensive rest
beneath the dogwood autumn – satiated,
gratified. Is this your prophet’s way?
