days of death (continued)

i grew up seeing my name on a cemetary stone
my father died six days before his 23rd birthday
he was a bomber pilot at age 19 in ww2
my mother said he drank a lot
when i was 23 i was a pilot in vietnam
i flew a hearse
when i was 24 i hit the streets
formed a cordon with grunts
told the delegates
“stop the bombing, stop the war”
now i am 60
i wonder when the critical mass will rule
how can we let ourselves be lied to?
the intensity of war sounds romantic
but it feels like rotten pumpkins
