escape artist

she was an
escape artist
an houdini mistress,
a mater of insistence,
a cool, cruel jewel of a
magic act, a never-look-back
trick, slick like ice, super soul
pricked by da unplugged
location aspect.

it was the cast of a circus play –
she did her acrobat leaps in an expert way –
he, on the other end of the stage, threatened
with his damn blast of an outrage thrashed out
but we didn't hear his voice yet

gonna disappear, y'hear, she'd say,
and when you turned your head, poof!
gone! an imaginary song on an ear memory

placed her left foot flat on the
surface of elevated minor chord,
then greased a glissade
from east to north one rope over
in the wrong direction

quark stark moment,
bibbitybobbity voodoo...

she was an escape artist,
like me, see,
a gonna-VANISH,
spanish-speakin queen

ganged up on by
sleight of hand, the damn
intentional tragic magic got her
by her Merlinballs, and she, as tall
as Alice was tall before the confetti display
met adversity with grace,
chased electricity down a rabbit hole,
ended up Queen of Doesn't Matter,
mad-hatter wild, turning directions

just focus on the shadows she casts
just focus on the shadows.

gonna disappear, y'hear, she'd say,
and when ya turned yer head, poof!

you cannot make her change direction
by focusing on the shadows she casts.
