yahagi

Here is the yahagi,
“Japanese model foghorn"
bought at auction.
Never have any real use for it,
just think it's cool.
Pull it out every New Year's Eve.

The irony of course,
It's anything but celebratory.
A low mournful tone
like welcoming party guests
with a funeral dirge.

The horn is not my favorite part.
The gearing as you wind it up,
that's my woody.
It has the substance of an old
rotary phone booth phone.
Those beauties that would put
spring weighted pressure against
your dialing finger then clik clik clik
back on a ratchet upon release.
Heavily mechanical and secure.

Think I'll remove this megaphone,
take away its sad voice.
Dial up a new year right now.

Let it call out one final time before you put it to rest.

damn, i wish i could've heard that mournful tone.
i really like mournful tones.
the japanese are really good at mournful tones.
i'd collect mournful tone makers if i could afford them.
something pleasantly mournful about them...
like silent overcast skies and 18 degree weather.

thx for the memories.

OK already, I didn't mean I was gonna scrap the damn thing, I was just gonna take the telescoping megaphone off the front.. haha now it looks like a duck without lips. Maybe if I can find Doreen around I'll have her show me how to get a recording of it on here for y'all. :)

scott... do a search for "free mp3 hosting" on google. I don't use those sites but there should be plenty of them. Then once you get the mp3 uploaded, you can link to it here from the mp3 host's site. If you don't find a site you like or are unable to host it elsewhere for some reason, email me the mp3 and i'll put it up on the studioeight server and provide you a link.

also I got your pm about photos.... to make a zip file, you will need WinZip on your computer, I think. I'm not a PC expert. I use Mac and Mac's can make a zip with one click. I don't remember if I answered that pm yet or not. If this is a rerun, sorry.

sorry no comments on the poem yet.. have been busy working.. will get back to it

Sounds like a great idea to me Scott... smile
I myself might just do that.

Perdida, this is suppose to be a poem of optomism so you're welcome to crank this baby up and take it for a spin any time you like...

Ya know, it's rainin like hell outside so I just set the ol' yahagi up and blew it out the front door a couple times. Totally freaked out the chinese cooks next door. They came running out into the street screaming "Yahagi, yahagi, yahagi!!!, thinkin it was Pearl harbor or sumptin. I told them in my best Chinese that in these conditions I didn't want our warehouse to collide with the warehouse accross the street. Gee, turns out the sound is not quite as mournful as I remember it last New Years (of course I'm not drunk) :)

btw did I mention this is a rough draft
