Under the Deep Blue Sea

The undulating kelp fronds brushed her slick skin as she swam through the cove. She felt deep peace immersed in the salty water from whence life had evolved. Her legs scissor kicked propelling her deeper into the realm of silver fish and coral reefs. She wore her gill wear converting water into oxygen. The synthesis allowed her to live in the sea like a dolphin. She often loved to drift with the current swirling her body like a kelp frond into the aqua blue cosmos which she called home.
Emerging from the kelp she gazed through her goggles at the shimmering bubble where her fellow mermen lived. She swam to the gossamer surface pressing the lock. Her pulse began to increase. The council still hadn't decided what to do with her. Her relationship with the landman had been innocent she thought. She had slept with him only once. Whey the elders were pressing the matter baffled her. The air lock was empty of water and she removed her gill apparatus. She saw herself in the mirror door. Her legs were long and lean. She had curves which any man would desire. She had many childbearing days ahead.
Kayla walked deliberately through the translucent corridor. She could see the silver dart fish flashing in formation outside. Kayla felt her pulse had leveled out now. Ahead was a muscular woman with huge biceps. Kayla paused. Her heart rate quickened. The woman she knew was the head mistress. The woman blocked her passage. Kayla was afraid. She knew what this implied. The reality dawned on her like a rising sun. The meaning was clear. The head mistress raised her hand, with the palm aglow with red. This was the ancient symbol for outcast.
Kayla retreated into the entrance of the airlock. This was her world. She couldn't leave for anyone, especially not a man. But Cedric was also an urgent need. She never felt loved by a merman with the fire that Cedric inspired. The choice burned into her very womanhood like an unquenchable fire. Her need for Cedric was undeniable. It burned deep down in her marrow.
The mistress palm grew bright red blinding her. Kayla fell onto her knees prostrating herself in a plea for pardon. The head mistress caressed her scalp. She consoled her with words. "Go Kayla. Don't bring shame on your sisters."
Kayla whimpered and fell back into the airlock. Donning her gill breather she swam upward into the dazzling blue light.
