wondering what the hell

Post by judih » August 3rd, 2008, 5:34 am

i a marionette cutting my own strings
helpless to do anything else
i fall in impotence
i crawl in false pride
i mouth the niceties
hoping to please the worms, the eagles
yet inside i squirm in noise and foolery

life is a slow spring somewhere over the hill
the thought taunts me
all thoughts taunt me

i ache to be free of strings
and stringlessness
a ball bobbling in a summer's pond
compass set to smile

excellent work, judih. i especially like the line about the worms and eagles, but there are many memorable and well-crafted lines in your poem. it has the feel of a natural - a poem that reads as if it has always been there.

nice work judih.....you say so much with so few words, an art....
this reminds me on one level of the expression," be careful what you wish for"....I have been parasailing a few times, an activity that has the participant strapped into a parachute standing on a pier in the middle of a body of water....you are tethered to a speedboat that
accelerates to the point you are lifted into the clouds...it's quite a rush....I did it for the exhilaration of flying, but there is also the thrill
of what would happen if the line breaks....up, up, and away......
your poem stirred my memory of this......enjoyed !
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading

thanks so much, people, for these brilliant responses
dino - i'm blushing ("excellent") that it struck you as a natural and so glad to have resonated with you
steve- my son tried wakeboarding yesterday and though it's not parasailing, watching him from the boat yesterday, i can imagine what you experienced - and syncfully can appreciate that particular 'string' of thought
still- thank you, jack
arcadia - i bow to your bravo, but believe me, it's a very quick bow
nazz, sir, i like your free play
mt cecil mynd - yes. toronto has a bunch of layers waiting for the peel

free of strings
i fall
clatter down to the ground
a skeleton of no use
to either worms nor eagles

a crawling carcass in the desert
of pride and niceties
rackaboning my way
towards the hope
for the next oasis

my lost strings
pulling fata morganas
from the horizon

as the creeping
leaves a trace

a line in the sand
on which i begin
to write my motion

scroll the motion of the hand that writes
in the desert wind
or even in a text box

the yiddish version has a certain charm
but all I could find was frankie lane's version

i hope I have not "tagged" your post j

* Sparkle on the Monkey Train* JUDIH !! Whew! (wiping sweat from brow) don't look now but I am tracking you across Siberia where I will steal you from the tent of the Master of the Horselords and, with the whole of the Mongol nation in close pursuit, we will flee over the steppes for our very lives, laughing all the way! God bless you, judih, God bless you!
Doll, you may have found a place of rest but I'm still on the trail.
