Chance Encounter

I hadn't seen her in years
she looked just the same to me
she refreshed my glass and my memory
remember the wind? and oh, that night?
we won't mention how long ago, will we?

I know, I know, your kids are grown
and your dreams are blown
live on hobbies and the internet
the years have treated you nicely though

she blinked and she was twenty-six
nothing as seductive as foolishness
we spoke of our triumphs and mistakes
the candle flickered and the piano player
seemed to know our tunes

we had our casablanca moment
when he played as time goes by
what if we had done this or this or this?
what could have been? she gave a sigh

then she looked me in the eye
we can't change anything, I fear
we can't add anything or subtract
what shall we do now, my dear?

I read this piece earlier this afternoon. It's lovely! What a beautiful connection described!

This piece is so wistful. It was a refreshing way to start the morning. What if? What a sad but poignant question.
