solved every mystery spilled
cocaine on his Strattavarius
had I not been a poet

I might have been a family man
children on my knee, stability
I might have known tranquility
had I not been a poet

had you not been a poet, you might have discovered deep truths and invented them, had you not been a poet. and the world would scarcely notice that you simply reinvented them.

Oh but what's the fun in that!

Had you not been a poet
you might not have questioned
re-examined yourself
and thus would not have known
the awful truth
the humdrum of a certain life as it unfolds.

Plus you would not likely have written this...and that would be a shame!
