The Old Piano Roll

I ran into an old friend the other day
it was a piano I used to play on occasion

a little Yamaha studio grand
once sat in the Balcony Club in Dallas

well, it is a piano bar, what do you expect?
after ten years of service, they retired the instrument

put it out to pasture and sold it to my friend
this gave me a chance to touch her again

my right hand fingers felt the little grooves in the ivory
where old Al Dupree pounded out Satin Doll

every night for ten years, he didn't cut his fingernails much
could play every song in the Real Book without looking

she was like a comfy whore, well used and flexible
the ring was still there where I usually parked my Bombay/rocks

Every piano player in town had touched her one time or another
we played into the night.

are you a poet? cause, this is, like, poetical or something.

I had to google "real book" though.

and, I've had a similar "whore/well used instrument" thought before in various clubs where there are house instruments. think of all the fingers who have touched "her"... I'm still a bit funny with people playing my guitar. luckilly I have close to no friends, which means my guitar is rarely touched. I'm not speaking metaphorically here... although, i could be.

I enjoyed this one, lr. I wouldn't call myself a musician, but, from one player to another... nice read.

when i still played the piano, i always loved the feeling of my fingers sliding over the ivory. musical instruments and making love is linked in my mind for some reason...specially pianos, saxophones and guitars...
