The Perfect Poem

suppose I wrote the perfect poem
spilled like semen from my pen
so perfect that it means everything
fills all purposes and is complete
what if just by reading this poem
your world would be transformed
the peaches would all be ripe
the living celebrated, the fallen mourned
exultation, lament, elegy, sonnet
mad, erotic, wild but strangely soothing
couplets that take you around the world
slap you then hold a mirror to your beauty
It makes all the women wet, the men courageous
The academics discuss it at length
The young find inspiration there
The old find comfort and strength
It is much memorized and quoted, this poem
included in speeches, made into songs
it settles all disagreements, soothes all wounds
makes grown men cry, the damsel swoons
If I sat down right now and wrote this poem
in one rude act of creation
would I be rich and eternal
would you love me then?
spilled like semen from my pen
so perfect that it means everything
fills all purposes and is complete
what if just by reading this poem
your world would be transformed
the peaches would all be ripe
the living celebrated, the fallen mourned
exultation, lament, elegy, sonnet
mad, erotic, wild but strangely soothing
couplets that take you around the world
slap you then hold a mirror to your beauty
It makes all the women wet, the men courageous
The academics discuss it at length
The young find inspiration there
The old find comfort and strength
It is much memorized and quoted, this poem
included in speeches, made into songs
it settles all disagreements, soothes all wounds
makes grown men cry, the damsel swoons
If I sat down right now and wrote this poem
in one rude act of creation
would I be rich and eternal
would you love me then?
