Gender Linguistics

Women are subjects, men are predicates
the girls are nouns and adjectives and the boys are verbs
Ladies ARE before they do
Men DO in order to become

I totally disagree. But what's new, right? First, I don't like the categorizations particularly because it's too stifling.

You can't really separate the sexes like that because we are ALL verbs and nouns and adjectives.... we all play those roles.

But if you really want to do that, I'd say women are verbs. They are usually the doers. They do a LOT.

Men are the nouns. Usually like a chair. They're just there, not really doing..... anything.

LOL!

(sorry, I guess that was a little sexist. Oh well. Forgive me.)

doreen, I've owned a couple of stratocasters in my life, but never a stratolounger.
the identity of a man depends on what he does (thinks, works, creates, earns, accomplishes)
the identity of a woman depends on what she is (beautiful, graceful, good mother, career girl etc.)

I used to hate to diagram sentences, but that's what I was thinking about when I wrote this little piece. The subject comes first and the predicate is on the other side of that perpendicular line.

I suppose that most of our disagreements fall on that perpendicular line between the genders.....haha.....you are such a woman.

ok, you can call it archaic and sexist, but it's true.

roles roll on

how can diagramming a sentence be sexist? ....

It is not true that men are the only ones who "think, work, create, earn, and accomplish." Women do all those things. And some men don't do some of them. Some women don't do some of them either (though I don't know any of those women and I, myself don't fit in that category. I do ALL of them.)

It is also not true that the woman's role is to be "beautiful, graceful, a good mother, a career girl." Is that all woman are supposed to do? Ugh. That's like one of my exes who used to say, "Just sit there and be a babe." You can see why that relationship didn't last, can't you? LOL

"Career girl" is demeaning. As if a woman's career is secondary in her life. As if ALL women don't have to work! We all have careers. Without them we can't pay the mortgage and feed our children. You expect women to depend on men for money?

The poem I was alright with having fun with the analogy but your following post where you use archaic stereotypes which are insulting to women.... I'm not alright with. I mean, YOU are alright with it, I can clearly see, but just sayin'. ..... they are sexist insulting stereotypes.

The roles are not cut and dry like that and a woman's purpose is not to be the things you said.

Women think, create, work, earn and accomplish.

This is our life.

So..... your sexist sentence diagramming analogy is bogus.

I don't think you are understanding my thought here
the roles weren't created by me nor do I subscribe or adhere to them
you know me better than that
the roles exist whether you or I like them or resemble them or not

but the roles exist because there is some truth in them
it comes down to the classic roles of passive/aggressive that are usually assigned to the female and male respectively.

To be sure, our modern society has put these role-rules into the cuisinard, but they still exist in our literature and our culture and our minds.

I know you have sores in this area. I guess you'll just have to lick them.

btw, I think the term 'career girl' is a compliment. What's not to like about Mary Tyler Moore?

You are wrong.

The roles don't exist at all.

No. I'm not going blind.

But if you'd like to play these roles, come on back and let's do it.

You can work, earn, accomplish things. Like do the maintenance on the house, shovel the snow, mow the lawn, keep the car in top running shape, and of course pay the mortgage and all the bills.

I'll sit there and be graceful and beautiful and be a good mom.

I'd be happy to find someone to do all those things while I go out and get my nails done.

Then I'll just stop thinking all together. And I'll stop creating anything, too. My entire role will be to be beautiful and graceful.

What a life!

do you see what I mean? These roles are still in your mind even if the circumstances of your life have not worked in accordance with them. This is what I was talking about when I said that the roles still exist in our culture and literature.

I'll come on back as soon as I make my fortune (verb) and then I'll hire a mexican to mow the lawn while you are being graceful and having your nails done.

LOL!!!!!!!!!

No, the roles you describe have NEVER existed.

Women have always done a LOT of work. They also think and create and accomplish. Always have.

The roles you've described are completely bogus. I was showing you how bogus they are by my last post.

The only thing serious about what I wrote is that I could use some help around here. But you knew that, didn't you?

It wasn't really an invitation to come back.

Peace 'n' love. Carry on. With both your sexism and your bigotry.

If I hear the "get a mexican" thing one more time, I'm going to puke. It really DID make me puke one time, btw.
