Domestic Tranquility

my grandmother put on a show
she feigned disgust for granddad
because he smoked, he smoked a pipe
around his rocking chair was a mess
he used kitchen matches to light his bowl
and often missed the trash-can with finesse
around his chair, around his chair was a region
of spent timbers, fallen trees and embers
tobacco crumbs

in the meantime my grandmother was a secret smoker
kept a pack of Salems in the linen drawer
it was the picture of domestic tranquility

"spent timbers, fallen trees and embers"...

You really get the flavor of that scene. Cool.

Hate to admit, but it reminds me of how it is around my chair. At the moment.

on occasion I have to call in the national guard
I get forest fires in my ashtray
they are pernicious and smoldering
and I have to waste good beer to put them out
