I took a step forward
yet somehow was yanked back.

By whom, it's uncertain-
as the invisible hand of life
left no fingerprints on my skin.

This is all I know:
My steps left no tracks
in the muddy earth.
Under the rainy sheet of circumstance
my path was blurred, gone.

So I must go back
and start again,
unable to remember where I traveled
when my footing was less secure.
