I did not read the Basket Ball diaries
i did see the movie, which i only remember
Leonardo's first big roll

I liked his roll as Rimbaud, as well
i do remember the very cool song
from the Jim Carroll band, People Who Died
Patty Smith was wise to get you to sing
your poetic lyrics

only a poet could write a song like that
i met a chick at a bus stop in Berkeley
that said she knew you, that was back in 80
it felt really cool that she knew you
she said you were on Methadone

i knew a guy from back then that was a junkie
he died died in some Hotel in Hungary, maybe
of smoke inhalation, while he nodded out in his room
i listen now to your song, and i hear the poet cryin
"those are people that died died" and now you are
one of your people,

Jim i did not run around in the New York crowd you did
all those great poets you knew and loved, but Jim i did
meet some great poets too, and those are mostly that
died died,...this poem is for you my brother'

do not mourn the dead too much who bear no
knowledge, have no need or fear of pain,

and who never again must see death
come upon what does not wish to die
A R Ammons
