the few

there are many who write
...but few who are writers
there are many who paint
...but few who are painters
there are many who play music
...but few who are musicians
there are many who dance
...but few who are dancers
there are many who draw structures
...but few who are architects

["Who am I ....]

there are many who study
...but few who are scholars
there are many who give thought
...but few who are thinkers
there are many who pray
...but few who are pious
there are many who philosophize
...but few who are philosophers
there are many who search
...but few who are seekers

[to sit and wonder....]

there are many who use drugs
...but few who are addicted
there are many who drink alcohol
...but few who are drunkards
there are many who make love
...but few who are lovers
there are many who make jokes
...but few who are comedians
there are many who smile
...but few who are happy

[while the wheels of fate...]

there are many who speak peace
...but few who are peaceful
there are many who talk politics
...but few who are politicians
there are many who are priests
...but few who know the soul
there are many who preach
...but few who understand
there are many who hear
...but few who truly listen

[slowly grind my life away.."]

I wore braces from 18 to 22, put on by this man http://garfinkleortho.com/MeetOurTeam/R ... fault.aspx
His practice was in Oregon City then, and I spent many hours there laid out on a chair, not wanting to be where I was. Don't get me wrong, he was a great man, had a wonderful practice, outstanding and warm-hearted people every one of them. But you know, medical appointments are a drag at any age, and at that age there were much better things I could think of to be doing.
If I turned my head to the right, there was a poster Dr. Garfinkle had on the wall there that read "Don't just do something, said Buddha, sit there."
What has this got to do with anything? I don't know. I just hoped it might help.

Peace,
Barry

Verses, flanked by soothing brackets holding streams of reality.
This is a spectacular piece, fabulous to read, I mean, it does something fabulous to me, like a great painting does, only it's words.

truck... Hes'... thank you kindly for your words. i've wrapped them carefully with antique paper that is imprinted with designs of places and spaces one rarely sees and placed them in a quiet place so i can return to them when i seek a special comfort.

Spock in Star Trek 2: "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one."

Spock in Star Trek 3: "Sometimes the needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many or the few."

thesis: individualism

antithesis: collectivism

synthesis: ? ? ?

Cecil... I liked this very much! It holds much truth.

........

Editing suggestion - I was always taught that when you're referring to a person, you use "who" rather than "that." I do, though, ALL the time see "that" used as you've used it but for some reason, maybe because that early grammar lesson is embedded in my head since childhood, it seems it would sound better substituting "who" for "that" in every instance in this poem. Just an idea. See which sounds better to you.

Thx SooZen... Barry... and Doreen for stopping by and leaving replies.

Yes, Soo... CJ and the Fish... how we know about them, eh... .. you're first time with Joe McDonald at the Family Dog on the Great Hiway, SF... memories too cool to ever forget. (maybe time to dig out some of old Joe's music... Pandora? hmmm....;) Thx, baby.

Doreen! I gave it some thought and spoke it out loud and test drove the edit and it's a GO! thank you, my friend, for making this piece more polished and better sounding. I appreciate it. [I was probably was in deep thought (stupor?) during that part of English class.]

Cecil, this contemplation is sublime. Your thoughts are golden and wise. Many are demented but few insane. Just an addition for what its worth. :)
