Willie and Me

Willie and Me

Way back when
I listened to nothing but classical
I wore my refined taste
Like a coat of arms
An emblem of my elite status

Now me and Willie groove
Mama don’t let your babies
Grow up to be intellectuals
Don’t let them read Plato
And read them old books
Let them be rednecks and hippies and such

I can even talk like a country boy
When I lapse into a hillbilly
Yet I still indulge in Enigma
Not quite classical but still classy
On nights like tonight

Music is music is music, John, elite, hillbilly or otherwise. Whatever moves your soul, brother. But you already knew that.

Peace,
Barry

Yep, you're right Barry. These days I listen to everything under the sun including country, soul, and rock. There is such rich diversity in music, it would be a shame to exclusively listen to one genre.

Stilltrucking, thanks for classifying it as hip. I like to come across that way. Once in a while write on a lark. :)

Hester, thanks for the reaffirmation of my poem as hip. Light and meaningful are great characterizations too. :)
