World Is So Much With Us

In a paraphrase of Wordsworth--
I find much in it wise
The world is so much with us
As TV meets the eyes...

Try as I might I absorb the blare
Of the TV,
The news, the ads, the scoops
Of Happenings--

I reach full tilt and am "sated"
By the gore & sorrow on the tube,
Even the shootings lately on the streets
Hit home that the
World is so much with us--

Sometimes too much for me to take--
Then a lady named, Jewel, aged 81,
Brought me out of my TV stupor--
She's expecting our country
To once again shine like polished gold...

Yes, the world is so much with us,
We look for that peace
Passing all "grok"--
As we hear the ticking of the clock,
As our lives slip away,
But hoping to see our country with new eyes:
"Once again, we'll shine like polished gold'.

I could always use another pair of eyes, a hopeful pair to balance my cri-ti-cal-ity... I want to see my country with new eyes too, but with open eyes as well.

Great to have both eyes open. But sometimes we sleep. When we are
asleep our "third eye" takes over when we dream. Ohhh Yeahhh! Our
brain keeps working and sometimes out of dreams come good poems, inventions, and inspiration. Couldn't imagine sleep without dreams. Whole societies are inspired by collective dreams. Watson solved the
structure of DNA because of a dream he had. The list is quite long.

More background...The lady who inspired me to vote for Obama was
an old lady pictured on TV when I was getting sick of watching certain events. I was discouraged and then this elderly lady comes on who
rejuvenated me. Then after I slept on it, I wrote this poem. Not the greatest, but why, biblically, have a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket. Why not broadcast your dreams in 360 degree visuals for all to
see and perhaps get inspired. I was even tired of writing poetry at that time in my life. A magazine I'd written for had just folded and I was at
my wits end to find other formats for my work. So, its good to have ones
eyes and ears open. You are so right.

Obama was able to capture the imaginations of many that were non believers....time will tell, i suppose whether their dreams were realized...it's probably unlikely since many of us are so needy.....but it was heartening to know people still had the capacity to be inspired..

In a time when our country is in desperate need for strong leadership, a new path to lead us out of the mire we're facing, a strong and positive view of a future that will sustain us and offer us the peace, security and level of prosperity that will not infringe upon others same needs, Jewel was right on - we need that expectation, that hope our President speaks for, and not the constant negativity we are fed daily, "to once again shine like polished gold.."
