K State of Mind

I will never be able
to erase the image
the young woman
on the ground
screaming
into the warm air
a prone student nearby
his crumpled body

lifeless
silenced by the armored guard

this appeal
this woman with the anguish
of all injustice
the shock of fatal reality
the horror
of this new world she inhabits

pleading with the universe

the picture will not go away
no matter how hard
I squeeze my eyelids
whether I'm alone in the dark
or in the scorching light
of the noonday summer sun
the picture is always there

what they are capable of

wow. shades of kent state, china, vietnam, burma, iraq.
seems it's been gone like that for a while, on and on and on.
..just now trying to get caught up, but i wonder why
anyone should bother. some things never go away.

powerful (to state the obvious), steve.

it is wise to remember kent state. that is the state's ultimate answer to true freedom of expression - you can express anything until it matters - until it gets in their way.

The moguls must replenish their larder. Anyone who gets in the way, as a serious impediment, must be obliterated. Sometimes they have to find creative reasons to justify this to the masses. I feel the burning pain in this poem. I was too young to remember this. But I remember Nicaragua. Now we have Iraq and Afghanistan. Time to prosecute the real criminals.
