children should be seen and not heard

i learned to talk at some
foggy, indescernible age,
when the colors fell in syllables
to their deaths in punctuation,
and the skyline heaved a sigh
and became an ellipsis
hanging, waiting for the time
to learn to breathe to
wait
to hurry blurs along
the notes we weave to speak.
she was waiting, resting her lips
on cobblestone crumble, counting
out her notes before struggling to speak;
i pleaded with my eyes, but
she laughed until i had nothing
and i remembered
that when i learned to speak, i
penned an instruction booklet
so i could learn to sing; the notes
were indiscernible, but
the tiptoe of my pen
brushed the curl of my lips, and
i learned to speak in silence.
