Sloping Into Chaos

Sloping Into Chaos

Chaos forms in a distant corner of my mind
Each thought breaking the surface to the conscious mind
Brings me one step closer to mystical union
With the telegenic cosmic consciousness
Of Oral Roberts
Prayers whispered between bites of pizza
Echo through the room between commercials
The static obliterates each mumbled hymn
As “Onward Christian Soldiers” fades
The channels changed in dexterous finger strokes
To "Apocalypse Now"

Wagner's “Ride of the Valkyries”
Booms across my couch potatoed form
As Hollywood bombs
Rain on mythical villages
The slaughter mimics Biblical Justice
Of the fall of Jericho
Robert Duvall swaggers through bodies
Dropping playing cards
With cavalier pride
What a guy?!!!
As my mind slopes into dream like ecstasy
Each beat of my heart sends shivers through my spine
The terror of existence
With death waiting in the wings

Finally I pop a soda
Till my fizzling mind
Sinks into numbed torpor
Robert Duvall's sardonic words
Catching my mind unawares
“I Love the Smell of Napalm in the Morning.”
The surreptitious thrill I get from this maniac
Gives me chills
Am I America?

Well done, John... plenty of satisfying imagery within to sharpen it's song.

Apocalypse Now is one of my top 10 movies, ya know? ;)

Arcadia, much thanks! I love that Zurdo phrase. Don't know the exact definition of Zurdo but context lends meaning. ;)
