don't mind me, i'm only brooding

there are those who delight
in whatever misery has befallen your soul
'cuz it gives them the chance
to wax poetic and speak old cliches
that to them seem profound
because a person better-read than they
once enlightened them so

but i've read all the poets
and the philosophers past
and i know that men far greater than me
have imparted some wisdom that seems
to penetrate to the core of my distress

so before you tell me that
the world's a stage or nature is truth
understand that i've read the sonnets
and i've heard the meditations
and i appreciate the truth
that the great men have shared
in a general sense
but it's not wisdom that i can grasp
'cuz i'm not them
and i've read too many poems
to have my life changed
by one enlightened quip

Yeah, the quoters and platitude-ers-- for me, a little goes quite a long way (I hope that's not too much of a platitude). On the other hand, you pick up a few choice nuggets along the way.

I know what you mean. During a bad stretch the last thing you need is a string of smart aleck quips.
