today neisau wants to make contact with me
but i don't know who she is
she in fact might be a he
and i wouldn't know the difference

i am asked whether i want to accept or decline
the advances of literature and chat lines
but i don't know where to begin

i think at first it must be some kind of ritualized gathering
the faceless electronic communique
where people who don't know each other
ramble on about life and other mysteries
without ever smiling into each other's eyes

and how strange it is
to be anonymous like a japanese beetle
perplexed by my own ugliness
and how no one would know how ugly i am

the thought is almost inspiring
as a would be birthday card
if it was your birthday

the anonymity breaks the silence
that we are confined within

and this greeting from someone
whom I do not know
holds the presence of possibility
and the strangeness
of picking flowers in the rain

it is a strange phenomenon and something
rarely to occur

the realization of an unknowingness
and how little i know
and how ridiculous i am
