Reminds me of Buddhist doctrine. Our actions and desires add links to the never-ending chain of cause and effect. When we strive to end this cycle, we make the infinite even longer still. Only by embracing the path of non-being can one hope to attain this "unconditioned state." Of course, hope is a desire, too. It's no wonder there's so few Buddhas.

I agree. This piece makes me think of how amazing it is that we can all see and understand these problems/temptations/desires (however you want to word it), but for some reason it's so hard to act on them, or prevent them. But again, we are only humans with an involuntary means to be happy. I'd like to meet an American who can religiously follow the Eight Fold Path.
