the day after the break-up

the day after the break-up
==========================

you sit at the bar
and prepare to get used to the
dim lighting of debauchery.

the beer works best
for the day after the break-up:
the whiskey's too smooth,
it goes down too fast--
five minutes in and you're already gone.
you don't wanna go down too fast.
you wanna sip the beer and
stare at the wall
and ruminate on the torrid
emptiness of what is.

save the flowery
wisdoms for the philosophers
and pour me another pint.

the break-up's a bitch
not because you loved her
and miss her so much,
but because you're used to her way--
comfortable with her presence,
used to her laugh,
used to her perfume,
familiar with her hello.

who the hell are these women
with their foreign perfumes?
who the hell are these girls
that sit at the bars
and laugh with their friends
and talk about shit
that i can't comprehend?

i've had my day in the sun.
ikea closes at ten
but the bar's here 'til two.
i better get used to the lighting.

i like it when it flows like that
shaping out mode and a story.
blowing up a desperatness in a cold wind of memories.

Those three lines scream Joe. I think you and I share a lot of the same views and philosophies, but express them in our own, unique ways. I think I could pick out your writing just by your tone. (And I mean that in a good way, I love your tone).

"And when we return
our voices will be heard,
because we are brave enough to sing
and legends' past will be
smiling."
