velvet butterfly
bat flees from the golden dawn
sleeps now upside down


33.

bats stream from dark cave
dusk calls them to summer’s feast
ears pricked for radar

saw photos of the bats in Austin once

creepy, fascinating creatures for sure.

I have never found bats creepy, I just keep reflecting on all the mosquitos they eat -- they are awfully smelly, though, if you ever get near their sleeping quarters! I have had some great encounters with the Austin bats, including a welcome my first day of work in the city, when I came tottering out of the office building at dusk and heard this strange twittering. I looked up, and way above my head about twenty or thirty bats were flying in a circle. I figured they came to greet me -- the word was out they had a new buddy!
