symbol of rebirth

Scarab dung beetles lay eggs in a pellet of dung which they roll along using their hinds legs, and the Egyptians regarded this action as an image of the sun and its course through the [heavens], rolled by a gigantic beetle.
The scarab represents the Egyptian god, Khepri. It was Khepri that pushed the sun across the [sky].
The scarab beetle became an ancient Egyptian symbol for rebirth, since each day the sun disappears (dies), always to rise and be reborn the following day.

Usually, the Nile overflows its banks each year leaving a coating of mud throughout the river valley. In the spring, adult scarab beetles were the first relatively large organism emerging from this mud. This emergence behavior indicated to the Egyptians the return of spring.

The Egyptians did not know the life cycle of the beetle and had not observed the adults mating. Thus, to the Egyptians, the beetles were observed emerging from the earth as if they had come into existence via spontaneous generation. The Egyptians interpreted this behavior as self-creation and again linked the dung beetle with Khepri - the sun and creator god. The dung beetle became the "sacred scarab beetle" associated with the religious concept of new life or rebirth.
