Ode to the Lunch hour

Post by .Lucy. » October 12th, 2010, 4:14 pm

Oh hour of golden shimmering freedom,
like the reflection of a velvet dusk upon the ocean-
Top of the Lunch break to you good lads and lasses.

Where dreams of delicious sandwiches from exotic delis
are plausible, a skip or phone call away.
A walk in the city, breathing in fresh smoggy city air,
a time to ignore the ringing of that phone,
the monotonous ringing
that seems to haunt me in my sleep.
Lunch hour- a time when emails are not read nor responded to,
when craziness and hectiness melt away with one huge sigh.

I envision my dream Lunch break
Sipping on chilled apple juice, yummy bites
taken out of turkey burger deluxes.
Listening to Count Basie, Elvis Presley, Vivaldi,
or perhaps Korn.
Reading the Voice in the hopes of finding some
randomly awesome event to attend this coming weekend.

Yet here it is, 4:13 p.m. Tuesday afternoon,
and I have yet to take my lunch break-
despite my 8 hour work day-
and the gnawing need to eat something
besides pretzel sticks.

it's important to take these breaks, important to minimize the effects from the demands of the modern employer that many days seems obsessive.....
the more we can decompress from it all, the healthier we will stay....I have definitely related to you poem many days.......
If you do not change your direction
you may end up where you are heading

first my stomach growled along with excitement and anticipation because it sounded all like such a wonderful idea (except the turkey burgers...whcih I really enjoyed once, but...)...
but then I realized: it's only so relatable because it's so terribly true.

good one!
