Human vs. Human: Episode II

Snow had fallen and frozen in the night.
Hours before pale sunlight they were kicked,
not awake. They had not slept, huddled.
A few at the bloodless edges had died.
Hundreds of them, hungry hundreds
limped toward that terrible, black mine.
Their trembling shook the brittle earth.
Two guards basked at their barreled fire.
A skeleton knelt, reached for its warmth.
They crushed his elbows and thrust his hands
into the flames and laughed, “Warm enough?”
This story is told: In that bleak darkness
before dawn his screams awaken you.
It is not true. It is a lie, a dream,
a nightmare told by an old, mad poet,
never awakened by screams
that would not let him sleep.

Sort of a comment on Disconnected by happy trails. I anybody wants it, will post Episode I later. Jim
