Soft Rain Will Come

Soft rain will come.
It waits for the fire to die,
for crusted earth to dry,
to hear the last bee’s hum;
waits for a final battle,
for signals none will send,
the last tree’s bony rattle
in merciless, scorching wind.
After the long dark night,
after the death of streams,
when there is no more light,
when there are no more dreams,
a gentle storm will break
and earth will taste its wine;
old seeds will soon awake
to ancient, secret design.
There will come soft showers,
the windblown aroma of flowers,
and whatever lives remain
will lift their faces to rain.
