Dawgawnit!

Saw her at the ranch’s Christmas dance,
felt I’d like to take her for a walk,
but found I didn’t stand a chance–
when I got close up I couldn’t talk.
Dawgawnit!

I dreamed and dreamed and dreamed I kissed her,
and tried to rope her in but missed her.
I slung my long reata at her.
When it fell short, it didn’t matter--
Dawgawnit!

I’ll try and try again, I swore,
then looped my lasso low and flung it–
I should have coiled it up and hung it,
let it rest on the horn–I’d never score.
Dawgawnit!

I often tried to cut her from the herd
but she wouldn’t cut, made me look absurd
when my baffled horse threw all his tricks,
his somersaults and spins and kicks.
Dawgawnit!

Months and a year I hoped to land her,
make her mine and gently brand her,
but quicker and slicker than a walleyed calf
she dodged my rope with her little laugh.
Dawgawnit!

So sadly I gave up, ready to let her go--
there’s always another, so what the heck.
Now look at me, and wouldn’t you know,
I’m wearing her rope around my neck.
Dawgawnit!

Fell right into her trap, cowboy! While you were muttering Dawgonit and coiling your rope in disappointment, she sneaked up behind you and laid HER rope on you! Ah, the romance of the Not/So/Wild/West ... hope the branding was gentle, by the way.

P.S. Enough of praise. If you get an answer, the poem was a success, okay? Sue
