When Automobiles Ruled

When rock and roll was flapping its new wings
the cars were magnificent works of sculptured metal
with potent names like Thunderbird and Mustang
every boy knew he had in his hands

the inalienable power to seduce chicks.
Barracuda, Cobra, needed no explanation
Charger or GTO guaranteed you
that you would not be lonely tonight.

Meteors and Galaxies, stars looking at stars
in Lover's Lane with the top down, the radio on
working on a little something one man called
mysteries without any clues.

The Night Moves of fresh-faced teens
inspired and aroused by the powerful allure
of those sex machines on wheels, and sadly
the best they can come up with today is Achieva

Focus, Endeavor, Altima.....PITIFUL examples
of imagination that hardly be expected to
stimulate nor facilitate the horny angst
of two young bodies engaged in backseat discovery

Wunderbar. Maybe it was "sexmanship." These days it seems to be salesmanship of nothing worth buying.

I must tell you about the collision of a Mustang and a Thunderbird. Nobody was hurt, thank goodness, but there was horse hockey and bird feathers all over the highway. jim

they don't make 'em like they used to, as appropriate. and when rock 'n roll joined the team, all bets were off. that's some jazz...

never had a Mustang car
or a Thunderbird one
my only love machine
the first car I owned
i got for a lousy 100 bucks
(a small fortune)in those days
was a used 56 ford station
wagon with furry rug
in back it came with
and 8 track tape deck
I had a few 8 track tapes I played
like the Rolling Stones and John Mayall
I played it loud as it could
I had no tiki gods on the dash
or phosphorescent plastic jesus
the clunker lasted only six or so months
and i only remember sleeping with
one girl in it but it was worth it
I even wrote about my 56 ford
in a novel, a meditation on cars
and freeways, and what siting
in a metal box on wheels of
rubber and runs on glue
like Jim Morrison said
I just kept driving until
the wheels fell off
until the gas runs out
for good
