His article appeared some years ago,
a man who tried to be a runner and
who’d documented all the steps he’d planned
to wake up extra early & to slowly
move in new directions, shifting toe-
from-heel (instead of side-from-side in grand
commitment to a status quo that landed
him, at middle age, too deep below
the higher goals his life had hoped to know).
And even when he paused – for sometimes weeks –
between his runs, each sole determined breath
that jogged again breathed grace to forward go—
and isn’t that how resurrection sneaks
again to life and makes us failure’s death?
