she used to say never trust literature
to an academic, they'll eviscerate it every time
they mine for ore, dispose the slag, reality
they read novels unable to see society
they speak like drunken deconstructionists,
perhaps it's the wading pool razor-sharp cynicism
the abysmal understanding or lack of it that needs
to see some dry land, wake folks to the ills
that big daddy wants to keep quiet.....
Upton Sinclair explained the mysterious jungle
de Balzac the vicious heart of the human comedy
but Johnny Law kept writing them tickets
that couldn't be torn up even when you appeared
in time to beg for mercy, decent treatment
and it was shocking to see my old face distorted
by the lies of the mirror, made me want to cry
for re-incarnation, cryogenics, bionic parts to delay
the inevitable demise of breath when I had so much
work to do to make this a just world, ha, ha
a better world, ha ,ha, guess I never could
grasp the fact that the truth might be relative,
but then again I guess I could never grasp
the fact that truth might be irrelevant either
damn, that Alan Greenspan seemed so smart.
