the unbelievable saga of a nice guy

I've contracted this
late-stage condition
of doing good
I know it sounds strange
but each time I do it
I feel a little higher
than the time before
I'm like this infected panther
hunting opportunities
to be nice, and I gotta tell ya
it can be highly addictive,
the nicer you are
the higher you get,
the nicer you want to be
'cause like any drug
you want to find the ceiling
the utmost rush of thoughtfulness,
so you wander the earth
a hedonistic do-gooder
looking for old ladies
to help cross the street
searching like a giant floating
smiley face with legs, arms
an inflated heart
looking desperately
for the next fix

Oh, my, yes, how well it works! Took me umpty-million years to figure out, just be nice to people! So they stomp on your toes when you try to help them across the street, elbow you when you stand aside so they can exit the elevator ... just smile, smile, smile! Finally that damn smile sort of grows on your face and there you are, Ms. Nice.
Ever look in the mirror and say to yourself, "Who, ME?"

being nice almost killed me-i treated myself really shabby, and was nice to others, i was so strung out on being nice i hated myself- working out was a boot camp in my head
everybody had something to say- i got tired, see, and now i do what comes in front of me
this morning i walked a beach, picked up a hitchiker, and took some great pictures of a rainbow on the ridge- much better

..just don't resort to "have a nice day"..
since it's the end of football season,
one of those "mis-direction plays," caught off-guard.
no way should this work as a play, as a poem,
unbelievable! but sometimes, well, you know...
