The Dogs

He said he didn’t hear the dogs barking.
He has on now all that he’ll probably need.
The late winter sky was darkening.

The train was here. Was he embarking?
She squeezed onto the narrow place with a leg over the edge.
He said he didn’t hear the dogs barking.

The wheels once again were turning.
That night, like all the others, she put him to bed
The late winter sky was darkening.

The sleeping car was fit for a king.
His head came down on the foot side of the bed.
He said he didn’t hear the dogs barking.

It is a great goodbye – a famous parting!
Why explain – when he may have understood.
The late winter sky was darkening.

Even the medal of honor ceremony was now a far gone thing.
She lay next to him on the bed.
He said he didn’t hear the dogs barking.
The late winter sky was darkening.
