shadows of the crows

The shadows of the crows were all I knew,
whose muted volumes floated fluently
like momentary midnights over blades
of olive grass and amber needles of
the undersides of pines; and somewhere high
their bodies must have filled the cloudless sky
as if the very raven mentioned, first
of all the birds, that fretted over thirst-
quenched flooded lands from Noah’s hands— and I
was ready then to see their figures vie,
with cloud and altitude and spirit hovering
above, for beauty— but the shades
of all those birds came down that truancy
from skies might draw our eyes to simple blue.
